Roblox Introduces New Safety Rules for Kids Amid Growing Legal Pressure

Roblox has spent years marketing itself as one of the world’s biggest online playgrounds for children, but the gaming giant is now facing growing pressure over whether that playground has become too dangerous for young users. As lawsuits and investigations continue mounting across the United States, the California based company recently announced sweeping new restrictions and safety changes aimed at protecting children on the platform. The move represents one of the biggest overhauls in Roblox’s history and signals how seriously the company is taking the criticism surrounding child safety and online exploitation.

The company revealed that beginning in June, children under the age of nine will automatically be placed into a new category called “Roblox Kids.” These accounts will come with stricter protections, including chat functions turned off by default and increased content filtering. Another category called “Roblox Select” will apply to users between ages nine and fifteen, limiting mature content while still allowing communication features under tighter moderation rules. Users sixteen and older will continue using the standard version of Roblox with broader access to games and communication tools.

The changes arrive at a difficult moment for the company. Roblox has become the target of lawsuits from parents, state attorneys general, and advocacy groups accusing the platform of exposing children to predators, inappropriate content, grooming, and financial exploitation. Several lawsuits claim that minors were contacted by adults through Roblox and later manipulated into abusive situations. Critics argue that the company failed to properly warn parents about the risks children could face while using the platform’s communication systems and user generated experiences.

Pressure on Roblox intensified after multiple states launched investigations into the platform’s safety systems. Alabama and West Virginia recently reached settlements with the company totaling more than $23 million after investigations found that children were exposed to harmful interactions and explicit material. As part of those agreements, Roblox committed to stronger age verification systems, expanded parental controls, and tighter chat restrictions for younger users. Nevada also reached a separate settlement involving millions of dollars dedicated toward youth safety programs and awareness campaigns.

The company’s new rules go far beyond simple parental settings. Roblox is increasingly relying on facial age estimation technology and identity verification systems to determine how users interact with the platform. Communication between adults and minors is becoming far more restricted, while unverified users face limitations on chat access and certain game experiences. According to company executives, these safety measures are intended not only to improve protection for children but also to create industry standards that could eventually spread across gaming, social media, and even artificial intelligence platforms.

Still, the changes are already affecting the company financially. Roblox recently admitted that stricter safety measures have slowed user growth and reduced engagement on the platform. Shares in the company fell sharply after executives lowered annual revenue and bookings forecasts, partly blaming what they described as “short term friction” caused by the new verification systems and communication restrictions. Analysts say the platform’s massive dependence on social interaction makes it especially vulnerable when communication between users becomes more difficult.

For many parents, the updates represent long overdue action rather than innovation. Roblox remains one of the most popular digital spaces for children globally, with millions of young users spending hours inside virtual worlds created by other players. But the platform’s rapid growth also exposed serious concerns about moderation, online behavior, and how difficult it can be to protect children in user driven environments. The new rules may not end the lawsuits or criticism, but they show that Roblox is entering a new phase where child safety is no longer just a public relations issue. It has become central to the company’s survival.
