A peaceful family gathering at a banquet hall in Stockton, California turned into tragedy on Saturday evening when gunfire erupted just before 6 p.m., leaving four people dead and ten others wounded. The festive atmosphere of the celebration collapsed into chaos and grief as stunned guests among them children and adults were struck by bullets in what authorities are calling a possible targeted attack.

According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office (SJCSO), reports flooded in around 6 p.m. local time about gunfire at the banquet hall on Lucile Avenue. Emergency crews arriving to the scene found approximately 14 individuals shot. Four victims were confirmed dead, while ten were rushed to hospital for treatment. The injured ranged widely in age, suggesting that both children and adults were among those harmed, though authorities have not released any names.

At a press briefing, SJCSO spokesperson Heather Brent described the shooting as “unfathomable” and offered little detail on the motive, only noting that early indications point toward a targeted incident. No arrests have been made, and investigators remain tight-lipped as they work to piece together the sequence of events and identify any suspects.

Local officials expressed shock and sorrow, condemning the violence and pledging support for the victims. Christina Fugazi, the mayor of Stockton, urged residents to look out for one another and emphasized that families should not have to fear for their safety during celebrations. Her words mirrored those of Jason Lee, the city’s vice-mayor, who lamented the trauma inflicted especially on children who had come to the event to celebrate a birthday, not face gunfire.

The banquet hall where the shooting took place sits in a commercial area among other businesses, a stark contrast to the violent intrusion into what should have been a familiar, safe space for community and family. The fact that this gathering involved minors has struck a chord across the region, fueling grief and anger among residents who now must contend with the senselessness of a violent act at what was supposed to be a milestone celebration.

Authorities did not provide details on the conditions of all the wounded victims. Some were reported to be in serious condition, but the full picture remains unclear as the investigation continues. Law enforcement agencies from beyond the local jurisdiction, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), have reportedly joined the probe, indicating the gravity with which the case is being handled.
