Lil Nas X Appears in Court as He Seeks Diversion in LAPD Battery Case

Grammy winning artist Lil Nas X returned to a Los Angeles courtroom seven months after his arrest, taking a step that could potentially resolve his legal troubles without a criminal conviction. The 26 year old musician appeared in court as his legal team requested a delay in the case so they could pursue a diversion program, an alternative legal process that sometimes allows defendants to complete treatment or rehabilitation in exchange for having charges dismissed.

The hearing took place on March 12 in Van Nuys, California, where Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, stood before a judge while his attorney explained that she intends to file a motion requesting that the case be transferred into a diversion program. If the court ultimately approves the request and he successfully completes the program, the charges against him could be reduced or dismissed entirely.

The legal case stems from an incident that occurred in August 2025 in Studio City, Los Angeles. Police officers responded to reports of a man walking in the street while partially unclothed. When they arrived, authorities say they encountered Lil Nas X wearing only underwear and boots while moving through traffic on Ventura Boulevard in the early morning hours.

According to prosecutors, the situation escalated when officers attempted to detain him. Authorities allege that the singer physically resisted and struck officers who were trying to take him into custody. As a result, he was charged with several felony counts including battery with injury on a police officer and resisting an executive officer.

Following the arrest, the artist was briefly hospitalized after authorities suspected a possible overdose. He later spent several days in jail before appearing in court and entering a plea of not guilty. Bail was set at seventy five thousand dollars, and he was released while awaiting further court proceedings.

If convicted on the charges, Lil Nas X could face a prison sentence of up to five years. However, diversion programs are often used in cases where defendants seek treatment or counseling that addresses underlying issues connected to the incident. Successful completion of such programs can sometimes lead to charges being dropped or reduced.

After the court hearing, Lil Nas X briefly spoke to reporters outside the courthouse. In a short statement he expressed gratitude to his supporters and acknowledged the encouragement he has received during the legal process. The musician told fans that he loves and misses them and looks forward to reconnecting with them soon.

As he left the courthouse, witnesses reported a moment that reflected the performer’s more lighthearted side. Passing a street musician playing guitar nearby, he paused to listen to a song and reportedly tipped the busker one hundred dollars before continuing on his way.

Despite the ongoing legal matter, Lil Nas X continues to maintain a presence in the music industry. The artist rose to global fame in 2019 with the record breaking hit “Old Town Road,” which topped charts around the world and helped establish him as one of the most recognizable pop figures of his generation. Since then he has released several successful singles and remains known for his bold visual style and genre blending approach to music.

The case is scheduled to return to court on April 6, when a judge will review the request for diversion and determine how the legal proceedings will move forward. Until then, the outcome remains uncertain as both sides prepare for the next stage of the process.
