The 2025 Met Gala dazzled with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” paying homage to the elegance of 18th and 19th-century Black dandyism. From Rihanna to Doechii, A-listers brought drama, flair, and precision tailoring to the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But as always, Zendaya reigned supreme.
Since her unforgettable debut in 2015, Zendaya has become a Met Gala mainstay. This year, she stunned in a sharp, all-white Louis Vuitton suit and wide-brimmed hat, an ensemble tailored to perfection. Styled by her longtime creative partner, Law Roach, Zendaya’s look quickly became one of the night’s most talked-about appearances.
Interestingly, Law shared ahead of the event that he would attend the gala separately from Zendaya for the first time. “We’re doing our own thing this year, which is exciting,” he told E! News in April.
But a fashion curveball surprised everyone, including Law. As Shōgun star and fashion newcomer Anna Sawai ascended the steps of the Met for her debut, she wore an eerily similar crisp white Dior suit. Law, mid-interview with Hello Beautiful, spotted Anna and couldn’t help but react in real-time. “Sorry, she got on Zendaya’s look. I’m so glad we came early,” he said, clearly caught off guard.
Social media erupted. One fan posted, “I don’t think that’s ever happened to Zendaya before, how awkward 😭.” Others called it a red carpet déjà vu moment reminiscent of Sex and the City 2’s Samantha Jones x Miley Cyrus scene. Many sympathized with Anna, noting it was unfortunate timing for her debut: “Her style is usually on point. This would’ve been a MOMENT… if it wasn’t ZENDAYA of all people she was matching with.”
Despite the chatter, Anna handled it with absolute grace. She and her stylist Karla Welch addressed the incident lightheartedly on Instagram Stories. “We can add homage to Zendaya as well 🌸,” Karla wrote. Anna added the perfect touch of humor and humility: “Celebrating the spirit of Black dandyism and Zendaya 🤍 hehe.”
Ahead of the event, Anna had expressed excitement about stepping into more androgynous style territory. Speaking with The New York Times, she said, “I feel like every carpet, I’ve only worn dresses. This is going to be the first time that I’m getting to kind of channel my androgynous side, and I’m really excited to pay respect to Black dandyism.”
Zendaya hasn’t publicly commented on the fashion overlap, but Law Roach later shared vintage images of his inspiration, including iconic shots of Bianca Jagger from the ’70s on his Instagram Stories.
At the end of the day, it’s clear: great minds really do think alike. And in a room full of fashion giants, Anna Sawai still stood tall with style, poise, and a pinch of wit.
